WAGO 221 vs WAGO 222: Which Lever Wire Connector Do You Need? (2026 UAE Guide)
If you've spent an afternoon in the connector aisle at any electrical supplier, you've probably held both a WAGO 221 and a WAGO 222 in the same hand and wondered whether the extra 4 dirhams for one over the other is worth it. Short answer: they solve different problems. The 221 series is for splicing — joining multiple wires that all arrive from the same side. The 222 series is for extending — passing a run through, wires in one side, out the other. Pick the wrong one and you'll either fight it into the back-box or end up with a hairball of loops.
This is the comparison we get asked about most often at the counter. Everything below is what we'd tell you standing in front of the shelf — plus the KableKonnect PCT alternatives we stock in Dubai for a fraction of the WAGO price.
The two series in 60 seconds
The 221 is WAGO's flagship. Released in 2014 as a slimmer replacement for the older 222, it's what most electricians now default to. Same-side entry: two, three, four, five or eight wires all push in from one face of the connector, and each gets its own lever. Every conductor in the connector is joined to every other conductor. That's it.
The 222 is older, larger, and still very much in production because it does one thing the 221 can't do cleanly: pass wires through. Instead of one row of ports, the 222 has two — inputs on one edge, outputs on the opposite edge — with a screwless lever cage in between. Two wires in and two out, three in and three out, all the way up to five in / five out.
The KableKonnect PCT-21 series (PCT-212, PCT-213, PCT-214, PCT-215, PCT-218) is the 221 equivalent. The PCT-2 series (PCT-2-2, PCT-2-3, PCT-2-4, PCT-2-5 — plus colour-coded 2-C/3-C/4-C/5-C) is the 222 equivalent. Same ratings, same body materials, made to the same cage-clamp principle.

On paper the electrical specs are identical. The difference lives in the shape and the port arrangement, and that dictates when each one actually helps you.
When to use 221 (same-side splicing)
The 221 wins any time you're joining more than two wires that are all landing at the same point. Ceiling-rose termination — live in from the switch, live out to two or three light fittings — is the textbook example. Grab a 3-way or 4-way, push each stripped wire into its own port, drop the levers, done. The whole assembly is small enough to tuck behind the fixture plate.
It also wins on cost per pole. A 5-way 221 has five clamps in one body; using a 222 for the same job would need you to loop or double-back, which defeats the point.
Where it doesn't help: extending a cable run. If you have a live coming in and a live going out to the next box down the wall, forcing both into a 221 works but the second wire has to bend back on itself. It's ugly and it makes the strain relief marginal.

When to use 222 (in-line pass-through)
Reach for the 222 when your job is to extend a cable — or join two existing runs mid-way — without introducing a T-junction or making one wire loop back to meet the other. Wires in on the left, wires out on the right, one-to-one. Same-colour port on each side is the same electrical point.
Two examples where this earns its cost:
First: a fault-finding job where a lighting circuit has died and you've cut the cable to test. Rather than a wire nut or a re-crimp, drop in a PCT-2-3 or PCT-2-3C, push the three cores in one side and the continuing three out the other, and the circuit is back live with a reversible connection.
Second: joining an incoming SWA tail to internal T&E in a hallway junction. The 222 form factor means both cables sit end-to-end in the box, no doubling back, no cable congestion.
The colour-coded variant (KableKonnect's PCT-2-2C, PCT-2-3C, PCT-2-4C, PCT-2-5C) is worth the small premium if you're doing anything in a domestic panel — blue lever = neutral, brown = live, green/yellow = earth. Saves you tracing colours through the connector.

The "H" suffix (PCT-2-2H, PCT-2-3H) denotes a higher-temperature housing. Useful in enclosed LED driver bodies or downlight fixtures where the ambient inside the fitting can push past 85 °C. Otherwise same product.
Four real jobs — which one belongs where
1. New ceiling rose, one incoming feed, two outgoing to downlights. That's three wires joining at each colour. A 3-way 221 (PCT-213) is the correct call — three splices in a body small enough to sit inside the rose. Don't use a 222 here; you'd waste half the ports.
2. Extending an existing lighting cable by 3 metres. Cut, join, extend. A 2-in / 2-out 222 (PCT-2-2 or the colour-coded PCT-2-2C) does this cleanly. The two conductors don't need to meet in the middle — they pass straight through.
3. LED downlight chain — 240 V feed into a chain of eight fixtures. The feed enters, and at each fixture you tap off two wires without breaking the run. Here neither the 221 nor the 222 alone is ideal. 4. Rework in a distribution board — joining an incoming 4 mm² neutral to five outgoing 2.5 mm² neutrals. The 221 (specifically PCT-215, 5-way) handles this. All six conductors land at the same clamp point, mixed sizes are fine (each port grips independently), and the connector's slim profile fits down the neutral bar side of most DBs.
Pricing — WAGO vs KableKonnect in the UAE
WAGO 221-415 (5-way, single unit) sells on Amazon.ae in a pack of 25 for around AED 90–110 depending on seller — about AED 3.6–4.4 per connector. The equivalent PCT-215 from KableKonnect is AED 3.41 per unit, single-unit or trade quantity. Same 32 A / 250 V rating, same cage-clamp mechanism, same 0.08–4 mm² wire range.
For a panel-builder using 500+ pieces on a project, that difference compounds. The reason we brought the KableKonnect range in was that the WAGO landed cost in the UAE keeps it at premium pricing that doesn't reflect a genuine specification advantage.
FAQ
Is PCT-215 really the same as WAGO 221-415?
Same connection principle (screwless cage-clamp), same electrical spec (250 V, 32 A, 0.08–4 mm² hard wire), same PA66 housing. Not made by WAGO — this is the KableKonnect equivalent, which we brought in specifically because WAGO's UAE-landed pricing puts it in a premium bracket the specification doesn't justify.
Can I use a 222 as a 221 by only using one side?
Technically yes — the electrical connection between the two sides is one clamp per pole, so a wire in port 1 on the left is joined to port 1 on the right regardless of whether that right-side port is occupied. But you're paying for a body twice the size and burning back-box space for no benefit. Use the right one.
What about the WAGO 2273 or 773?

Do the KableKonnect PCT connectors carry CE certification?
Yes — CE and RoHS, and pass the same IEC 60998 lever-cage-clamp requirements as their WAGO equivalents. Certificates available on request for any project spec.
Can I mix WAGO and KableKonnect on the same job?
Yes, they're physically compatible with the same wire types. Some contractors do exactly this — WAGO where the client has specified it, KableKonnect for the rest of the wiring in the same panel.
Is 32 A enough for a UAE domestic circuit?
For lighting (typically 6 A protected), ring finals (20 A or 32 A), and most sub-circuits below main incoming — yes. For the incoming 63 A or 100 A meter tail, no — you're outside the push-in connector space and should be on a bolted lug or a proper distribution terminal block.
Which one to buy
If you can only stock one, stock the 221 range. It's the more useful of the two for the volume of work most electricians do, and a 222 job can nearly always be adapted (with slight cable rerouting) to a 221. If you're doing extensions or joining existing runs mid-cable frequently — retrofit, fault-finding, panel modifications — carry both.
